JUNE 2022 NEWSLETTER

MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT

As this newsletter to members is produced, the weather has certainly turned quickly towards the normal cooler temperatures that winter brings.  We can’t complain, I suppose, as we have had some sensational autumn weather, including around 180mm of rainfall following a very dry February.

Hand Waterers.  The volunteer workforce of hand waterers remained active through summer and autumn taking care of drying spots on the greens and surrounds, but also replenishing other areas where works had occurred.

How good does the drainage works appear on the 18th fairway and the renovated left side of the 3rd fairway, after what has only been a short time?  Considerable work in these areas were done by Pat Foy, Dave Hilet and the band of volunteers.  We will continue to reap the benefits well into the future.

Volunteer of the Month – April 2022.  Our Volunteer for the Month of April was Peter Kelly for his considerable efforts in fund raising for the Royal Children’s Hospital Good Friday Appeal this year.

Volunteers of the Month – May 2022.  For the month of May, the committee recognises the superb efforts of members that assisted with the 6th and 16th Tee renovations:  Bill Brown, Bruce Thompson, Col Dowd, Dave Hilet, Dennis ‘Tug’ Wilson, Dirk Rynaard, Eddy Hamlin, Kev ‘Count’ Anderson, Murray Sells, Neil Uren, Norm Schmidt and Peter McCoy.  Well done to all who were involved.

Care of the Course.  With the return of rainfall over recent days, the greens have softened a little and are once again being subjected to ‘pitch marks’ that are not being repaired.  Please be mindful of your own as well as existing pitch marks and repair them properly before walking off the green.  Remember using the repair tools that are available from the shop for free, draw the depression towards the centre, rather than lifting upwards.

Also, please make sure to fill in existing divots with sand across the course, including in the rough.

Private Golf Carts – Private Insurance.  Thanks to all members involved who responded to my request a few weeks back by supplying confirmation of their Golf Cart Insurance.  Such ‘user’ insurance is a necessity in the event that an accident occurs on the golf course confines.   The Club’s own public liability policy only responds to ‘club owned’ carts.

Saturday’s Meat Raffles.  The Committee sincerely thanks Ron ‘Triny’ Trinham for having conducted the meat raffles since its inception as well as Count Anderson for  his time spent in organising the purchase of the meat prizes over the past number of years.

As those who normally stay back for presentations have seen, the meat raffle has been tweaked slightly after a number of feedback and input from some members.  Trial changes have seen the beef prize replaced with a generous meat tray.  The participating numbers in each draw have also been increased from 30 to 40 while the cost remains the same.

Depending on further feedback received, additional changes could be made to the featured meats.  In the spirit of continued improvement, please provide any feedback you may have to the Committee.

Update of Member Details:  Members are requested to review and update their existing details within the Cerberus Golf Club OneGolf website.  Accurate details will ensure that contact (if required) can be made with members and that membership renewals will arrive at correct addresses.

Membership Fees – Season 22/23.  Membership renewal letters will be made available to members in June.  Membership Fees for the coming 22/23 financial year must be paid in full prior to the 1st of August 2022.  Members will see that the Committee has decided to raise fees to balance the ever rising costs that the club encounters weekly in operating every facet of the business.  The same costs that we encounter weekly at home, such as fuel, most goods we buy and the transport costs.

Equality Matters Update.  As reported at the club’s last Annual General Meeting on 27 November 2021, Cerberus Golf Club was involved in conciliation at the Australian Human Rights Commission (AHRC).  Cerberus Golf Club was subject to a claim of gender-based discrimination.  The AHRC conciliation failed to bring about a resolution to the claim.

On the 3rd of February 2022, the Committee was served with a VCAT application that had been lodged against the club under the Equal Opportunity Act 2010.  The claim alleges the club is discriminating against its members on the basis of gender.

On the 22nd of April 2022, members of the Committee participated in a VCAT mediation.  This process again failed to bring about a resolution.  Therefore, VCAT has set the proceeding down for  final hearing on the 22nd and 23rd of November 2022.

Members are advised that the Committee remains firm in the decision to defend claims made against the club.

The Club’s Legal Team has advised that the substance of the VCAT proceedings should remain confidential until its resolution.

Regards,

Steve Wright
President CGC

MESSAGE FROM THE CLUB CAPTAIN

COURSE NOTICE. Members please note that Ground Under Repair (GUR) has been reintroduced on the new area of the 3rd/12th fairway, as defined by the roped off area.

BOOKING SCHEDULE.  Along with winter comes shorter days of sunlight.  As a result, we have adjusted the earliest time of booking to a later time to ensure golfers tee off when the sun has already risen.  This means, fewer field groups available in the early morning board, so please be mindful to delete your booking as soon as you know you are unable to play.  This will enable others to take your spot.   Meanwhile, the afternoon board will come forward, with a 10:15am start, to avoid the early sunset at the end of the field.

Regards,

Dave Hilet
Captain CGC

MESSAGE FROM THE LADY PRESIDENT

Another busy couple of months have passed for Cerberus Ladies, with the Golf Peninsula Victoria Match Play well underway.  So far, we have had the pleasure of playing at Cardinia-Beaconhills, Mt Martha, The National and The Valley, coming away with 2.5 wins so far.

We hosted this event at Cerberus Golf Club on the 16th of May and were very fortunate to have the weather on our side.  The members of the other clubs were suitably impressed with the condition of our course and the improvements in the Golf Shop and kitchen.  Playing and using these facilities every week, we sometimes forget just how far Cerberus Golf Club has come over the last few years so it is nice to be reminded.

Cerberus Cup, our annual Four Ball Match Play (the Ladies’ equivalent of the Hooker Trophy), has been hotly contested over this time as well.  The final two teams, Dot Callaghan and Linda Denny vs Danielle Griffiths and Kris Kelly, will be playing their match on the 13th of June.  Good luck to both teams.

The decline in numbers due to weather and health issues has required the Doris Chambers Foursomes to be rescheduled.  This will now be held on the 21st of June, replacing the Canadian Foursomes.  The Doris Chambers is a Women’s Golf Australia (WGA) event where the winning pair will play against winners from other Golf Clubs.  The State Finals for the 2022 Doris Chambers Cup will be held in Southern & Sanctuary Lakes on the 21st and 27th of October 2022.

With the success of our first ‘Get into Golf‘ program, we have decided to offer another 5-week clinic later in the year.  This will probably begin in September and we will work with Danny Shine in regard to course availability when choosing when to hold the clinics.

As a result of feedback received from the participants of the first Get Into Golf program, we are also working on having a Professional Golfer come to Cerberus Golf Club to give a follow-up clinic program to those women who decide to continue on upon completing the ‘Get into Golf’ program.  We are hoping that this is also something that we will be able to offer to our members as well.  Watch this space!

Regards,

Vicki Rynaard

MESSAGE FROM THE CLUB MANAGER

Despite the arctic blasts we have experienced over the past fortnight, golfers continue to roll up at Cerberus Golf Club and enjoy our course.  Competition fields remain healthy and green fees are again up on last year.

Great to see local football club (Crib Point FC) book out our course for a full field shotgun start (Sunday, 5th of June).  Many of our members have strong links to the Club and we have always enjoyed strong patronage from current and past players.

I would like to remind members about our dress code.  Regularly we have members arriving with their guests, for social play or even competition, in t-shirts or torn and tattered “tradie” apparel.  Dress of members should at all times conform to the accepted standard of the Club.  Members are also responsible for the standard of dress for their guests.  For men, collared shirts are compulsory.  Some of the apparel that are not acceptable at the clubhouse and around the course are tracksuit pants, singlets, work boots, beach wear, thongs and board shorts.  It would be most appreciated if members could be more mindful of our neat casual dress code and assist us by also reminding your guests.

With the end of the financial year looming, I would like to encourage all members to redeem their golf shop prize credits — which would assist the club to reduce the liability on our balance sheet.  This month, we are holding a stock clearance sale with some items with up to 50% discount.  Some great buys available also include 25% off all golf bags in store.
