MARCH 2023 NEWSLETTER

MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT

At the time of the last club newsletter in November 2022 we were experiencing extraordinary rainfall that had not been witnessed for many years. Here we are almost three months on and with virtually no rain through the December to February period, we are now looking for some decent rains.

Despite the lack of rain the course is holding on well particularly the key areas of the course being the greens and tees.  The left side of fairway three where irrigation was added a year ago is looking like an oasis. The renewed first and tenth tees and drainage works added in vicinity of the clubhouse are standing up well and have certainly lifted the appearance of the whole area.

The hand waterers looking after this area and all of the greens deserve special praise for their time spent in looking after these important assets.  This group was recognised by committee recently naming them as Volunteers of the Month for February.

Volunteers of the Month: December 2023, the volunteer crew who completed the 1/10th drainage works and tees refurbishment; January 2023, the volunteer turf layers who completed drainage works; BZ to all and thanks for the continued support to the club.

Recent Special General Meeting of the Club/VCAT Matters:  The committee would like to thank all members that were present at the meeting 21 January 2023.  The response from members was truly overwhelming and has given the committee a boost leading up to the scheduled VCAT Hearing over 4 – 6 April.

Members Survey:  A big thank you again to all members who took the time to complete the recent Members Survey.  Data derived will assist committee going forward.  Special thank you to Kris Kelly for her valuable effort in coordinating the survey.

Welcome to All New Members:  A very special welcome to all new members who have joined our club over the past couple of months.  You are all very welcome and we hope you will remain with us for some years to come.

Men’s Pennant Season:  Pennant season is presently underway with the first two matches played.  Well done to all members participating and good luck in the remaining matches.

Greens Coring:  The next scheduled coring of the greens will occur on Wednesday 8 March.  There is normally two shifts of volunteers who support the task.  A list will be placed on the inside noticeboard this week for volunteers to place their names.

Recent First Aid Refresher – Ambulance Victoria:  Well done to all the members who attended the brief refresher on 1 February.  It was certainly enlightening including the changed initial responder requirements of “Call, Push and Shock”.

Care of the Locker Room:  Another request to members who use the locker room.  If those members could assist in keeping the area clean that would be appreciated.  Additionally, if you have equipment stored on site that is no longer used i.e., old buggies, if they could be removed from the area either to home or the nearby dump master that would be appreciated.  Big thank you to Gonzo (Steve Wilkins) for his efforts in cleaning this area along with the patio and seating areas.  He would still like a break from these duties that he has performed over many years: if there is a member or members that would be willing to assist in these tasks – please speak to Gonzo, Danny or myself for details.

Saturday Stroke Sausage Sizzle:  Thanks to our Ladies President Vicki Rynaard who has provided a tasty sausage sizzle over recent months.  This is certainly appreciated by the hungry members who battle their way through 18 holes of stroke.

Good Friday Royal Children’s Hospital Appeal – Ambrose Golf:  The club will once again stage the customary Good Friday Ambrose Golf Event on Friday 7 April. Teams of four, BYO lunch, entry cost: $10.00 per head. 8.30am for a 9.00 am shotgun start.  Great prizes for the winners, plus the normal raffle on the day to raise funds for the children.  Last year the tremendous total of over $5,000 was raised. Please watch out for further information and for the event to be opened in OneGolf.  Start getting your teams together now.

Care of the Course:  A brief note to encourage all members to repair damage across the course.  This includes divots on tees and through fairways and rough areas of the course.  Please carry and use a sand bucket.  When on the greens please repair pitch marks from balls and any other damage – damage done by you as well as pre-existing.  In bunkers please repair damage that you may have done – all your foot marks and divots – and also pre-existing damage from other golfers and animals within reach.

Pace of Play:  When on the course during competitions all members are encouraged to keep moving ahead – importantly – “keeping up with the group ahead not just staying ahead of the group behind“.  This will ensure that the whole field can progress in a timely manner.  During competitions players should move, whenever safe to do so, directly to their own ball and be ready to play. Not progress through the course as a group: while this may be very social it can also seriously retard play.  Please remember that the committee encourages ‘Ready Golf’ where appropriate.  Reminder that score cards and scoring on the mobile should be completed after tees shots on the next hole have taken place.

A message from the Match Sub-Committee:  The 2023 members’ syllabus is out and about for members who wish to obtain a copy.  Whilst every effort is made to accurately produce the annual fixture errors may occur or competitions may be altered as the year progresses.  It is important to cross check all fixtures with the OneGolf system as they become “live” 15 days prior to play.

Regards,

Steve Wright

MESSAGE FROM THE LADY PRESIDENT

It is hard to believe that we are already a quarter of the way through 2023 and that our ladies competition season is in full swing.  The Summer Cup is well and truly over.

Meanwhile, the Deb Andrew Rainbow Trophy, a 2-Person 18-Hole Ambrose Event, has been played and has fittingly once again been won by Deb Henderson and Kris Slocombe.  Runners Up were Linda Denny and Pam Brown while Nearest to Pins were won by Deb Henderson and Margot Smith on the 4th/13th and 6th hole respectively.  For the day’s event, we also had a Longest Drive up for grabs on the 7th Hole which was won by Kris Kelly.

The “Rainbow Day” is shaping up to be quite an event on our calendar and anyone that ventured onto the course on the day would have seen many colourful outfits and heard much laughter.

The prize for the best outfit is taken very seriously and people put a great deal of effort into what they wear.  This year’s best outfit winner was Kris Kelly with an amazing array of rainbow themed clothing.  The celebrations continued inside the club house with a rainbow cake enjoyed by all.

The week’s celebrations continued with many ladies heading to The Heritage for lunch to celebrate Maureen Treby’s 80th Birthday the following day.  Cerberus girls know how to enjoy themselves!

We have welcomed many new members over the last few months, the 1Club Clinics are enticing ladies to our club that have never picked up a golf club before and once they have a taste of Cerberus hospitality, they don’t want to leave.  We are currently in the middle of another of these clinics and I am optimistic that we will gain more members as they become more confident.  Thanks must go to Sandy Jamieson the creator and teacher of these clinics, his positive feedback to the women; not only about their golf but also about Cerberus Golf Club is a big drawcard for us.  Sandy was named 2019/2020 Victorian PGA game development professional of the year and it is clear to see why.

Our ladies are looking very professional as they represent our club in the many district events of late, all dressed in our traditional club polo shirts and our new club vests.  Danny is ordering more club polo’s for the Golf Shop and I will be sending out a final request for vest orders soon.

These will of course be on show when we host our 2023 Cerberus Bowl at the club on 20th March.  The date has been moved from October as the committee believes that the weather may be kinder to us in March and also there are fewer district events to compete with.  Judging by the entries received for this event so far, it has been a good decision.

Cerberus Cup entry will close 7th March as the first round begins 14th March, so please put your entry in quickly if you want to take part in this long running and prestigious event.

The Irish 4BBB will be held on 21st March and ladies are asked to wear something green to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day.

28th March will see all Cerberus girls head to Devilbend Golf Club to play in a competition that has been running for many years.  This competition was organized by Alice Phyland who had been a member of both clubs and wanted to create a friendly rivalry between them.  Alice passed away last year and we will miss her presence on the day.

Regards,

Vicki Rynaard
