MARCH 2022 NEWSLETTER

MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT

Nice drop of rain last week especially on the heels of coring last Wednesday.  February was pretty quiet in regards to rainfall, given there was less than 5mm in our general area.  The course received 35mm, Bittern about 47mm and Hastings closer to 50mm.  Bit of a spread, hopefully we will return to more regular rainfall during the immediate coming months.

Drainage Works 18th Fairway.  Still on the subject of course works.  Again, an excellent job by Pat, Dave and the volunteers who were:  Trinny, Bruce Thompson, the Count, Denis (with one ‘N’) Northcote, myself, Dom Carbone, Norm chmidt, Dave Hilet, Peter McCoy, Phil Gandy and Murray Sells.  Big thank you also to Vicki Rynaard for the nice fresh cream cake for morning tea.

Hand Waterers.  The drainage works would not have achieved its finished standard but for the work of the small team of hand waterers devoting their time and energy.    Members were:  Cherry Ridout, Leon Moran, Gonzo, Gary Walters, Kath and Col Dowd, Bill Brown, Laurie Wandmaker, Peter Molloy and Jan Smith.

Coring.  Last week’s coring went very well — probably the best I’ve seen in the past 10 years or so.  The weather was on our side, nice and warm, with a bit of wind.  The material used, including sand was spot on and the job done by the corers was great.

Well led by Pat and Dave, the volunteers were Dirk Rynaard, Bruce Thompson, Joe Smedile, Leon Moran, Murray Sells, Dennis Wilson and myself.  Top job lads.  Many thanks to Lou Lou for providing morning tea and lunch in her normal very cheerful manner.

Renovation of Left Side 3rd Hole.  To top off a very busy period of course works, the past week has seen the renovation of a good part of the left side of the 3rd fairway rough.  This involved the installation of a number of separate irrigation lines with about 24 sprinklers.  The associated area was deeply scarified (turned over) and combined with the sprinklers system, should see a much improved grass coverage over the coming months and beyond.

Well done to Pat and Dave, well supported by Bruce Thompson, Murray Sells, Bill Brown and Norm Schmidt. Big thank you to Joe Smedile for the use of his tractor and scarifying implement.

Volunteers of the Month.  Our Volunteer for the Month of February was none other than the Big Wheel himself – Ron (Trinny) Trinham.  He was recognised for his work in general about the club.  This month committee chose to recognise the efforts of all the Hand Waterers involved with the 18 fairway drainage project.  Those members are listed above.

Well done to all our volunteers for the continuing effort and this includes of course those that spend significant time weekly on the machines, and also Graeme who assists Pat with moving the travelling sprinklers during the week.  The support that our volunteers provide is a direct reflection of the heart and soul of the Cerberus Golf Club.

New Patio Flower Boxes.  Members this week will notice the addition of new flower boxes.  Thanks to Ken Walters for coming up with the solution to improve safety in the area while also enhancing the general environment with new plants.   Thanks Ken.

Good Friday Ambrose Golf – Royal Children’s Hospital Appeal.  I’m sure that all members will be pleased to learn that the club will stage its normal Good Friday Ambrose Golf Event on Friday 15 April.  Teams of four, BYO lunch, competition fee: $10.00 per head.  8.30am for a 9.00 am shotgun start.  Terrific prizes plus the normal raffle on the day.  Please watch out for the event to be opened in OneGolf and start getting your teams together.  After missing this event once over the past two years (COVID) it will be great to get back to raising funds for the Children.

Fridge and Freezer for Sale.  If anyone is in the market for a second hand fridge or freezer, ideal for keeping the beer cold and the fish frozen in the shed at home, the committee is looking to move these club owned items on from the back store room.  Cost?  All funds will go to the Royal Children’s Hospital Good Friday Appeal.  Please see Kevin Bentley or speak to Danny.

Rubbish Recycling.  In an effort to improve the waste return process at the Cerberus Golf Club, a request has been made to Defence for the 10 wheelie bins to be changed over.  Once done, this will provide an improved environment around the club, particularly in the patio area where the bins are located.  All Members and Patrons are requested to be more conscious of where waste is placed after use.   Please place all glass, cans and cardboard in the YELLOW LIDDED BINS and all general waste (everything else) in the RED LIDDED bins.  When inside the clubhouse, please do not mix these waste items.  Thank you for your compliance.

Steve Wright

MESSAGE FROM THE LADY PRESIDENT

Cerberus ladies have had a busy start to our golf season with a special birthday celebration for Dot Callaghan and the inaugural Deb Andrew trophy played on 15th February.  The course was inundated with some very colourful characters and the competition was fittingly won by Deb Henderson and Kris Slocombe.  Well done to these two ladies.

Get into Golf is well under way and has been very successful in encouraging women to have a go at golf in a friendly and welcoming environment.  We have already had inquiries about membership from some of the participants.  With a waiting list for the next course, I believe this could become a permanent fixture at Cerberus Golf Club.

The Cerberus Cup is now underway and will be played over the next few months, good luck to all those who have entered.

The last Tuesday of March will see us hosting Devilbend at home for the Alison Phyland Trophy.  This is always a fun day and a great way to reconnect with the friends we have all made through this game.

Regards,

Vicki Rynaard
Lady President CGC

MESSAGE FROM THE CLUB CAPTAIN

The local rules board has been updated.   Please check before teeing off.

Preferred lies are now in play – through the green.

Pat, Dave and our loyal volunteers have had a very busy couple of months with all the new work on the course.   As always the main goal is to see the course playability improve all year round.   With that in mind we are currently busy planning and budgeting for future works.   More news in this space to come.

Happy golfing

Regards,

Dave Hilet
Captain CGC
