OCTOBER 2024 NEWSLETTER

MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT

As we head into the better part of the golfing season the weather is bringing plenty of patron; members and greens fee players alike and with the course in arguably the best condition we’ve seen it’s great to see so many out there enjoying it all. With the greens now finely groomed and responsive after the coring there’s little left for excuses for poor putts yet I’m sure some will still exist. It’s up to us all now to look after the course as we all want the best playing conditions moving into Club championships and rounding off the year’s remaining competitions.

Masters Pennant is upon us and we look strong again with healthy numbers and well represented against competing clubs.

The recent 9 and Dine event held was a great success and thanks to the wonderful team that put the day together.

As no news is normally good news, there has been no further updates on the review of the Commonwealth Lease Arrangement so we continue on as business as usual. The new Defence Housing Project as we know will have some limited impact to the course once it begins and through construction which we will have our own plans in place for when that time arises.

There has been a great amount of work on the course this year with the revitalisation of bunkers and that project is set to continue over the coming months and there will also be some minor works around the Clubhouse frontage and the 1st and 10th tee areas. A thankyou from me to our tireless volunteers and staff in making all this happen and is greatly appreciated.

Volunteers of the Month

June 2024:  Many of you may have noticed that the quality and playability of our sand bunkers improved a lot in recent months. Mark Duggan, quietly assisted our course superintendent, Pat, in maintaining them and showed dedication in completing the task throughout the course.  No good deed remains a secret at Cerberus Golf Club so for all his help, Mark Duggan was recognized as the Volunteer of the Month back in June.  Mark also volunteered his time back in May, along with a number of our lady members, when we hosted the P.G.V. Match Play final day.

July 2024:  Despite the persistent heavy rains and harsh conditions we experienced in July, the paths throughout our golf course remained firm and compacted.  If you’ve spent time mostly in the rough or amongst the trees, you may not have noticed that the paths on our golf course had been upgraded.  They looked neat and attractive, all thanks to  𝑩𝒓𝒖𝒄𝒆 𝑻𝒉𝒐𝒎𝒑𝒔𝒐𝒏, 𝑫𝒊𝒓𝒌 𝑹𝒚𝒏𝒂𝒂𝒓𝒅 and 𝑲𝒆𝒗𝒊𝒏 𝑨𝒏𝒅𝒆𝒓𝒔𝒐𝒏 who we recognised as Volunteer of the Month back in July.

September 2024:  Once again our band of coring volunteers came together to help out our  tireless, hard working course superintendent, Pat Foy, and staff, Dave Hackney with coring, scarifying and thatching of the greens and surrounds.  The crew included, Bruce Thompson, Col Dowd, Daryl Kuhle, Dave Hilet, Dirk Rynaard, Kevin Anderson, Leon Moran, Murray Sells, Norm Schmidt, Neil Uren, Phil Gandy, Ross Treverton, Sharon Gandy and Steve Wright.

The aeration of our greens and surrounds done by these volunteers surely results in firm and healthy greens we’re starting to enjoy now.

For all your efforts and generosity of your time, we express our deep gratitude.  Cerberus Golf Club owes its great course conditions to not only our handful of staff but also our volunteers generous of their time and efforts.

Our trial to the revised hole setup of the 4th and 13th has received some mixed opinions; however, it would appear that the flow of groups has improved already in the short term which is all in the benefit of completing a timely and enjoyed round of golf.

Wishing you all long drives and short putts.

Regards,

Matt Marson
President CGC

MESSAGE FROM THE LADY PRESIDENT

Spring has arrived and with that a mix of days weather-wise.  We, the lady members, have started accepting invitations to play at other clubs in their annual bowls.  Our Lady Vice-Captain, Marg Wright, as usual, never waivers in ensuring messages are sent to our lady members, to solicit expressions of interests.  If you would like to represent our club in any of these annual bowls, we strongly encourage your participation.  It is always such a great experience to play in other courses.  Not only do you get to enjoy the game while improving your golf, you also get to meet new people and members of other clubs.

The Club just held our ‘Nine and Dine’ event during the Grand Final Public Holiday.  It was good to see new members, guest golfers, as well as members we don’t normally get to play with.  Needless to say, it was a great success.  We all had a lot of fun.  Hopefully, many more of this type of events will be organised.

Other events to look out for are:

8th October, Tuesday:  Ladies 4BBB for the Royal Women’s Hospital
13th October, Sunday:  The Commodore Purvis Trophy, Mixed Canadian Foursome.
15th October, Tuesday:  Ladies Foursomes Championships and Nett Trophy
7th November:  Cup Day, Alf Simpson 4-Person Mixed Ambro

Then November comes along:

3rd November, Sunday:  Open Gala Day
5th November, Tuesday:  Cup Day, Alf Simpson 4-Person Mixed Ambrose
17th November, Sunday:  Mixed Foursomes Championships.

Good luck to the men playing in Mens Masters Pennant which starts first week of October, Blue Team in Division 5 and White Team in Division 7.

Then of course, we have our Club Championships in November.  Please remember that the Ladies Club Championship is a multi-day event open to all lady members, even those who can only play on Saturday competitions.  Only the last and final round needs to be played on Tuesday, 26th November. All you have to do is put in your entries and entries close on the 22nd of October 2024.

Happy Golfing!

Cheers,

Mardi Reilly
Lady President CGC

MESSAGE FROM THE CLUB MANAGER

After some very nice weather at the back end of winter, the first month of spring has been very cold and windy.  Let’s hope for some better conditions leading up to some big events at the club.  Thanks to our brilliant course staff and volunteers, the course is in great condition and will only get better with the club championships on the horizon – good luck to all those competing.

NEW MEMBERS
Welcome to our new members who have joined this new financial year.  We continue to enjoy an influx of new golfers, and our membership numbers remain very healthy.  Due to high numbers, our 7-Day memberships for new members is currently “Provisional” – restricting access to the timesheet to 8 days prior (current members have access 15 days prior).

SHOP SPECIAL
A 60-degree wedge is a great inclusion in your golf bag if you struggle from bunkers or if you want to experiment with the art of the flop shot.  We have some TaylorMade high toe 60-degree wedges on special, which normally retails for $299 – our price is marked down to $199.

15% off Footjoy shoes.

NEW Taylormade stripe golf balls are now in stock, and our prices are considerably lower than major retailers – TP5 Stripe $72 or Tour Response Stripe $55.

Member credits are building in the club’s prize accounts, so please consider using those funds.

GALA DAY
I am looking forward to hosting our 8th Annual Gala Golf Day on Sunday 3rd of November.  This is a 3-Person Medley Ambrose.  Entry forms are out.  Please note entries for the GALA DAY must be made via the official entry form, which you can download by clicking here.

The Gala Day is always a great day, supported by our general sponsors including major sponsor the Westernport Hotel HASTINGS.   If you can’t quite get a team together or are a single player wanting to make up a team, leave your name at the Golf Shop and we will do our best to build threesomes.

NINE and DINE
What a great turn out and fun evening, a big thank you to Vicki Rynaard and her team of helpers for a job very well done.  A fantastic initiative from Vicki to make this event happen.  I look forward to bringing my family along for the next one.

Danny Shine
