JULY 2023 NEWSLETTER

MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT

Over the half way point in winter and we continue to receive some reasonable rainfall periodically. Touch wood – not as wet as some recent winters, we have received a total of only around 157mm through June and July to-date.  This follows around 110mm in May.

The golf course remains in pretty good condition despite the usual winter dormancy of our primary kikuyu grass.  The drainage works of recent years are continuing to prove invaluable.

Volunteer of the Month – July.  This month, committee has chosen to recognise the ongoing efforts of Murray Sells, who normally expends plenty of time and energy every week working either on the course or on club machinery.  As many members will be aware, both Pat Foy and Dave Hackney are currently away from work following respective medical operations.  Both will be in absence for a few weeks to come.  In their absence, Murray is spending even more time at the course.  Please let him know that his work and effort is valued by us all.  BZ mate and thanks.

Membership Fees – Season 23/24.  The majority of membership renewal letters have all been distributed, so if any member has not received theirs, please let our manager, Danny, know.  A reminder that all membership fees for the coming 23/24 year must be paid in full prior to 1 August 2023.

Update of Member Details.  Members are requested to review and update their existing details within OneGolf.  Accurate details will ensure that contact can be made with members, when required.  If members become aware they are not receiving text messages including any that draw attention to our website, please let Danny know.

2023 Annual General Meeting.  The AGM for this year will be staged Saturday 5 August with members asked to arrive prior to 9:00am for a 9:30 start.  Prior to the meeting, members will need to register for the day’s competition (shotgun start) that will follow.  The committee encourages all members – seven (7) and six (6) day members – to be present, even those who may not be playing golf on the day.

Positions on Committee.  There is plenty of space on the committee nomination sheet which was placed on the inside noticeboard last week.  Six (6) and seven (7) day members may nominate or be nominated for committee positions.  Sporting organisations such as ours cannot function without the support of members — Members who sacrifice some of their valuable time and energy to administer the organisation for the benefit of the wider membership.  Committee would welcome new faces or the return of previous committee.

Great golfing!

Regards,

Steve Wright
President CGC

MESSAGE FROM THE LADY PRESIDENT

The winter rains have been quite kind to us so far.  Although the days have been very cold, we have been able to play most days, dodging the rain.

The number of women turning up to play on both Saturday and Tuesday has been impressive given that the numbers usually get quite low at this time of the year.  It’s great to see that we are represented so well on a Saturday and that our Ladies are spread across the field.

Congratulations to Kath Dowd and Linda Denny on winning the qualifier to play off in the Doris Chambers event that will be held at Yering Meadows Club on the 20th of October this year.  We wish you both the best of luck and thank you for representing Cerberus Golf Club in the wider golf world.

Congratulations also to Yvonne Jones and Lisa Skinner Kent on winning the final of the Cerberus Cup.  They played a very hard fought game against Danielle Griffiths and Kris Kelly.  The Cerberus Cup pairs knock out handicap match play event played over many weeks.  To be in the finals is a credit to both teams.  The Cerberus Cup is a coveted award and is a much anticipated event every year.

Our Winter Cup winner was Jan Turner, who won against Margot Smith in the last round.  The Winter Cup is played as one stroke event with the best four nett scores qualifying for handicap match play. 1st plays 4th and 2nd plays 3rd then the winner of those rounds play for the trophy.  Well done to both Jan and Margot for being the final two standing.

The Win Guthrie, Presidents Shield and Silver Spoon are all being contested over the next few weeks and then we head into spring and the Spring Cup.  So much happening on the course and good numbers turning up to compete.  Cerberus Golf Club is in a great position moving forward.

On the social side, the ladies have celebrated many birthdays together and have recently celebrated Christmas in July at the Westernport Hotel.  The ladies at Cerberus do know how to have a good time when we all get together!

The event, that many look forward to, is of course our Oaks Day Luncheon which has been well supported for quite a few years now, with many of the local ladies coming along to show their support.  Seats will sell fast again this year so I suggest that the ladies mark the date 10th November on their calendar and get in early once it is advertised.

It has been wonderful to see some of our 1Club Program participants coming along on a Tuesday to play nine holes of golf and then join us for lunch.  While the time of year and the heavy conditions are not encouraging for beginners, they are still persisting and we have been privileged to get to know these ladies a little better.

I am hopeful that we will be able to offer 1Club Clinics again as the weather improves.  These clinics are fun, affordable and encouraging for beginners.  We are governed by the 1Club Program Instructor, Sandy Jamieson, and course availability as to the days and times these clinics run.  Nonetheless, we endeavor to suit as many people as possible.

Regards,

Vicki Rynaard
Lady President CGC

MESSAGE FROM THE CLUB CAPTAIN

Care of the Course.  With the present dampness around the course, members are asked to show restraint when moving about.  Golf Carts should be kept off the fairways and away from all greens while wet.  Push and ride on buggies should also be kept off green mounds and the surrounds.  Members should note the Local Rules enforced at the moment, with regards to ‘roped-off cart areas’.  The temporary structures in place on some fairways are to be treated as ‘Immovable Obstructions’ and relief should be taken.  Barriers are not to be moved.  Members are also asked to pay attention to the repair of ‘pitch marks’ on greens.  Please find and repair your pitch marks along with any that may already be present.  Divots across the course, including on tees, are quite numerous given the softness of ground conditions.  Please take the time while moving ahead, to locate and fill all divots.

Masters Pennant.  The 2023 Masters’ Pennant season will kick off on the 29th of September, which is a Friday, and is open to all six (6) and seven (7) day male members over the age of 50 years.  Cerberus has a long history of fielding strong teams in this competition.  There is a list in the clubhouse, where those eligible members seriously wishing to compete in this year’s competition, may list their names.  The club would require at least 20 names to comfortably fill two teams of seven (7) players each week.

Return to Self-Scoring.  Golf Australia has approved the return to self-scoring mode for golf competitions, as was the practice during the pandemic.  This was on the back of a big push from Golf Clubs across Australia.  Self-scoring proved popular with clubs through Covid and 98% of clubs using the MiClub (OneGolf) software are making the switch back.  Cerberus Golf Club is on board and we are now back to self-scoring mode.

We encourage you to read more about these changes, especially the FAQs published in our website by clicking on this link:  MiScore App Local Rules at Cerberus Golf Club.
