MAY 2024 NEWSLETTER

MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT

Not much rain about as this newsletter is circulated. None to speak of in February; 4.5mm in March; A nice 121mm in April and only around 21mm to date for May. Some of the autumn golf days gave been crackers! No excuses for poor golf!!!!

The Course

The golf course is certainly looking sensational despite no rain. Autumn is providing plenty of leaf matter which is keeping the ground staff and volunteers pretty busy. I think that everyone would agree just how great the 8th/17th fairway is now looking after the works earlier this year. Money well spent I would think.

Many would have noticed the recent work undertaken on the 1st Green bunker. As Captain Dave says this improvement process will be observed over the coming weeks and potentially applied in works on other bunkers across the course.  Well done to Pat Foy, Dave Hackney, Murray Sells and Bruce Thompson for their work on this project.

Welcome to Committee:  I would like to welcome Matt Marson to the ranks of committee as of last week.  We have recently lost a couple of committee due to posting and ill health and we are grateful for Matt stepping up to join the team for the remainder of the year.

Volunteers of the Month – April and May:  For April:  Committee has deemed it appropriate to recognise all the ladies that helped to cater etc for the Volunteers Thank you Function staged in March this year.  For May:  The combined effort of the ladies along with Bill Brown, Mark Duggan and Col Dowd who volunteered their time in hosting the GPV Ladies Match Play final at the club on Monday 13th May.  Big thank you to all and Bravo Zulu – Well Done.

Care of the Course:  Green fees traffic remains high across the course thanks to the terrific weather we have experienced. With this traffic comes the expected wear and tear including plenty of divots across the course. The greens are very susceptible to pitch marks and other damage. Committee would appreciate all members taking the time to repair divots in the fairway and rough areas, and also attending to ball pitch marks in the greens. Please go out of your way to repair your own damage and any you come across.

Shop Bargains:  Bargains a plenty in the golf shop. Great shirts and jackets and plenty of golfing hardware for members to spend their hard won shop credits. Some recent additions are the Scotty Cameron putters that Danny has got hold of. He does a stirling job of sourcing apparel and all equipment. Check out the shop and don’t forget if there’s something you need and it’s not in stock, speak to Danny and he may be able to get it in for you at a very good price.

Results – 2024 Good Friday Royal Children’s Hospital Appeal – Fundraising:  For the benefit of any members that may not be aware the club raised an extraordinary amount of over $9,500 at this year’s event on Friday, 29 March.  This was due to the generosity of the members and guests who attended the day’s activities.  As with last year, Peter and Kris Kelly again put in a huge effort in fundraising and obtaining a large amount of items for raffle and auction.  Well done and thank you to all.

Good Golfing to all!

Regards,

Steve Wright

MESSAGE FROM THE LADY PRESIDENT

The ladies at Cerberus have settled into a quieter time with the many Bowl and Open day invitations either played or waiting for the warmer months to be held.  I would like to take this opportunity to thank our Bowl coordinator, Margret Wright for the work she has done to have our ladies compete in all district events.  Thank you also to those that have put their hand up to represent our club in these competitions.

While we haven’t had a huge success rate this year, Cerberus is well known for sending representatives to as many of our district competitions as we can.

Our Guest Day was, as always, a great success with guests from many different clubs being invited along.  Thank you to our major sponsor on the day HK Beauty and to all our regular sponsors, L Cooper Real Estate, Kris Slocombe and Cherry Ridout for our Nearest the Pin and Putting prizes.  Our overall winners on the day were Libby Moore and her guest Debbie Lever.  Our ladies of course continued on with the tradition of supplying a wonderful lunch at the end of our game.

We currently have 50 lady members at Cerberus; this is the largest number that I can recall in my 20 or so years as a member here.  It has been rewarding getting to know the newer members to our club and I hope that they enjoy many years here making new friends and creating great memories along the way.

We are currently in the middle of the Silver Spoon competition. The Silver Spoon commences with Club qualifying rounds with winners proceeding to the State Final.

First Stage (Club Qualifying) – 1 Jan until 1 Nov:

Each club arranges between one (1) and four (4) Stroke or Stableford rounds between 1 January and 1 November. The winner of each round (if applicable), plus ties (includes those on a countback), MAY then play-off in a play-off round, on a date decided by the club, to determine the First Stage Silver Spoon winner.  The winner may then represent the club in the Second Stage where they will receive a Silver Spoon.

State final will be played on Monday 18 November 2024 at Gardiners Run Golf Club.

Our Cerberus Cup is also in its final stage with Yvonne Jones /Lisa Skinner-Kent to play Vicki Rynaard/Margaret Saunders in the final.  Cerberus Cup is four ball matchplay with the original handicap to prevail throughout the competition.  This is a knock out competition with winners of each match competing until only one pair remains.

Congratulations to Yvonne Jones on her recent Saturday Ladies Autumn Cup win.

Another huge event for our club was Ladies Midweek Matchplay, where both Division 2 and Division 3 played their final round at Cerberus.  We hosted approximately 120 people here from all over the Peninsula along with dignitaries from P.G.V.  I am very proud of the way our club presented on the day.  The course looked magnificent, thanks to Pat, Dave and all the volunteers.  We are very grateful to Pat, Col Dowd and Mark Duggan for working on the course in the dark prior to teams hitting off and to Danny for allowing us to hold the event and working out the many tee times so that the matches ran smoothly.  As always a huge thank you to the ladies that brought food along and helped with preparation, serving and cleaning up on the day.  Our Cerberus girls won their matches on the day although we were not in the running for the flags.  A great effort to all that played and caddied over the 5 weeks of competition.

Regards,

Vicki Rynaard
